Asphalt Shingles Asphalt shingles are the most commonly used shingle types in the United States. This is because asphalt shingles are economical, cost effective and relatively easy to install, when compare to other roofing types. Asphalt shingles are extremely durable and inexpensive. These types of shingles also come in a wide variety of colors and styles and hold up well in all different temperatures. Asphalt shingles also do a very good job of waterproofing. In Florida, an asphalt roof can last well over fifteen years, if properly taken care of. These shingles can also be treated to fight algae buildup. Ceramic Roofing Ceramic roofing tiles are another very popular choice. Although these tiles are a bit pricier than asphalt shingles, they can also last for a greater number of years. In fact, ceramic roofing tiles, if taken care of and properly cleaned, can last for between fifty and seventy years! Ceramic tiles are durable and they also have the added benefit of being fire proof. These types of roofing tile are most commonly featured on Spanish style home builds. Ceramic tiles, while durable, are prone to erosion, especially from strong winds so, that is something to keep in mind when looking for a new roofing material. Metal Roofing Metal roofing is the rising star of the roofing industry. Because metal roofs are very modern looking and require little to no maintenance, they are a great option for homeowners. Metal roofs are lightweight, which is better for the structural integrity of your home and they are also more environmentally friendly than other roofing types. Metal roofs are durable and do a great job of water drainage. Metal roofs can also be painted, to match any color schemes of the house that you would like. One disadvantage is that metal roofing can be hard to install and requires a specialized contractor (like us!). Wood Shake/Cedar Shingles Wood shake/Cedar shingles are a great choice of roofing for hot climates because they do a great job of resisting UV damage. These types of shingles can also stand up in nearly all different weather conditions and are generally treated with a fire retardant coating to make them safer. Wood and cedar shingles are also completely green friendly, as they are made from wood, which is a biodegradable material. This type of roofing has a shelf life of around thirty years and is a cost effective ways to have a beautiful roof. |
